Executive Officer handover
As of the 26 June, Hadyn Oriti handed over the Executive Officer reigns to Liesa Davies. Liesa joins us with background in international business and the travel and tourism sectors. Most recently, Liesa worked in Canberra in a range of roles including, Departmental Liaison Officer to two former Defence Ministers, a manager in Defence’s International Policy Division, Economic Analyst and a White Paper Policy Officer. Liesa, her husband and three young daughters made the seachange to Port Macqaurie 12 months ago. She tells us that she is excited by the growth opportunities our region has to offer and is loving getting to know more of our wonderful business community members through her new role.

Port Macquarie Airport - Master Plan Discussion Paper
Chamber has recently considered the Council’s Port Macquarie Airport – Master Plan Discussion Paper. In its response to Council, the Board emphasised the importance of the airport to the present and future community and that its further development must be a top priority: “The airport is a critical piece of the infrastructure framework underpinning the economy of Port Macquarie”.

The full response to Council can be found on the Chamber’s website.

Proposed Public Holiday for the Wauchope Show - Unions NSW (Hastings and Macleay)
In response to a request from Unions NSW, we went out to members seeking their views on the proposed annual public holiday for the Wauchope Show. The survey results were as follows: 23% in favour of a holiday and 77% against, with most expressing concern that the economic costs of a public holiday (to business as employers) would outweigh the benefits. As such, the Chamber has responded to Unions NSW indicating that it does not support their application.

New Members
We welcome our new members for June:
  • The British Lolly Shop – Julie Symons
  • Retire Invest – Christine Shepherd

We now have more than 200 paid up members. The growth in membership helps to strengthen the Chamber and give it credibility in its dealings with other agencies such as Council.

Our voice is only as strong as our membership and we encourage members to actively encourage others to join.

June Information night
It was wonderful to see such a large crowd at the June information night with over 100 members and guests in attendance. The focus of the evening was industrial development in our region and into the 21st century. Dan Williams from GHD gave a fascinating overview of the cutting edge approaches to ecologically sound industrial development. Peter Newman (Lawlor Services) and James Dunn (Expressway Spares) provided insights into progress of the Kew Industrial area and Sancrox Enterprise Zone. The Chamber is pleased to support the expansion of our region’s economic base and wishes these stakeholders well with timely progress of their projects.

Extraordinary General meeting outcomes
The Extraordinary General Meeting to consider the proposed amendments to the Chamber’s Constitution was held in conjunction with the members night on 23 June. Proxy votes were noted and votes cast at the meeting by a show of hands. The motion that the proposed amendments be accepted was passed unanimously. The amended constitution will now be lodged with the Department of Fair Trading and can be found on the Chamber’s website.

Work for the Dole Update
As noted in the 12 May newsletter, there was a degree of uncertainty surrounding the Chamber’s ongoing program delivering work for the dole projects post 30 June 2009. We have since been encouraged by the enthusiasm to see Work for the Dole continue and possibly include training. We are pleased that the program is set to continue and the Chamber looks forward to working with the three local providers : Wesley Employment, Jobfind, and the Central West Community College.

Casual Board Position
With the recent resignation of Peter Leicht, a casual vacancy opened on the Chamber Board. Board members have voted to appoint Hadyn Oriti to the position until September 2009. Nominations to fill the position for the next two year term will be taken in the lead-up to the September AGM.

July information night at the Glasshouse
At the invitation of the General Manager, Port Macquarie-Hastings Council, Andrew Roach, our next members information evening on 21 July will be held at the Glasshouse. Our speakers will include Mr Roach. The Board keenly accepted this invitation because it recognises that the Glasshouse is an elite asset to our community. We encourage members and guests to come along and find out about what the Glasshouse offers and how it can support out local business economy.
