The Board also discussed the Social Housing Policy and is in the process of preparing submissions to Council on three social housing development projects including the building height on Gordon Street and ensuring residents will comprise 85% seniors for the term of their use. In addition, it will aim to ensure local businesses are given priority in tendering for the work and compulsory sale of the adjoining lots owned by the Department of Housing.
The Retail Sub-Committee reported that the Retail Policy Plan is currently going through Council and expect it to be finalised by 2010.
The Industrial sub-Committee is concentrating in the zoning of industrial land, including the Sancrox area. The industrial region of port Macquarie will need an additional 84 hectares or more of additional industrial land over the life of the mid-north coast regional strategy – also see Issue 51 to cater for additional growth. A recent media release by the chamber says the future of commerce in the region looks promising. Click here to view media release.

Settlement City
|
Members of the Chamber’s executive have recently met with representatives of ING about the proposals for its site at Settlement City. The Chamber has made it clear that its CBD Policy will guide consideration and comments on any proposal. The Chamber wishes to ensure the CBD remains a vital and vibrant retailing and commercial location, preserving its sense of place, because that is critical to Port Macquarie’s prosperity.
For those interested, the Chamber’s CBD Policy can be viewed here.

Retailers Sub Committee
|
The Chamber wants to re-invigorate the Retail Sub-Committee.
An issue relevant to the Chamber’s CBD Policy and council retail policy is the recently released consultation draft of the NSW Department of Planning “Draft Centres Policy, Planning for retail and commercial development”. The draft policy provides a planning framework for the development of new and existing retail and commercial centres in NSW. The policy is based on six principles:
- Retail and commercial activity should be located in centres to ensure the most efficient use of transport and other infrastructure, proximity to labour markets, and to improve the amenity and liveability of those centres.
- The planning system should be flexible enough to enable centres to grow, and new centres to form
- The market is best placed to determine the need for retail and commercial development. The role of the planning system is to regulate the location and scale of development to accommodate market demand.
- The planning system should ensure that the supply of available floorspace always accommodates the market demand, to help facilitate new entrants into the market and promote competition.
- The planning system should support a wide range of retail and commercial premises in all centres and should contribute to ensuring a competitive retail and commercial market.
- Retail and commercial development should be well designed to ensure they contribute to the amenity, accessibility, urban context and sustainability of centres.
The Chamber intends to review the draft policy and then consider whether to make a submission.
Anyone wishing to join the committee, assist in this process or make a comment on the draft policy should contact the executive officer on executive@portchamber.com.au

Tourism Campaign
|
noleavenolife.com
Attention: All Tourism operators on the Mid-North Coast
A national campaign by the Federal government noleavenolife.com encouraging people to convert accrued or ‘stockpiled’ leave into time off at an Australian tourist destination is underway in the Mid-North Coast. The campaign concentrates on providing recession buster working family holiday packages in conjunction with local businesses willing to provide discount deals from May 1 to September 30, 2009
Tourism Australia is targeting Australian workers with a $1.6M advertising campaign urging Australian families to use up their 123 million days of accrued holiday leave. In addition, as of next week, 8.7M Australians will receive up to $900 as part of the government’s stimulus package and no doubt local businesses would love as much of that money spent on the Mid-North Coast as possible.
Entitled “No Leave No Life", www.noleavenolife.com the campaign concentrates on providing recession buster working family holiday packages in conjunction with local businesses willing to provide a discount.
A “tool kit” will be distributed among employers with marketing material for the workplace which will encourage employees to take leave and help boost the national economy. For this campaign to gain momentum, discounts would need to be either 10-15% or above. Employees would then verify through their employers on company letterhead that they are taking holidays for this purpose.
It may be the case that around 6,000 people in the local government area could each have in excess of 25 days leave. From a prudential and governance perspective, staff who never take leave are a worry. People simply need time out away from work to re-charge and taking leave is important from that perspective.
Not only does this initiative support good business practice, but it will help support domestic tourism and Port Macquarie stands ready to benefit. Port Macquarie is a great tourism destination all year round and a program like this is always welcome.
The Chamber and BEC has been asked to collect a list of interested tourism operators or businesses that are willing to participate.
